What is a Matshita DVD-RAM?

Maybe you saw the name "Matshita" online, or maybe you saw it in an error message that seemd to be referring to your DVD drive. Who the heck is Matshita? Funny story, that.

Turns out that a certain part of the software that talks to a DVD-RAM drive has to identify itself with a string that is limited to 8 characters -- it's just a rule Microsoft Windows imposed. So, when Matsushita had to come up with an 8-character name, they abbreviated Matsushita to "Matshita".

Matsushita is a pretty big name in Japan, enough so that many Americans know it. But if you don't know the name Matushita, you might recognize the name of one of their child companies: Panasonic. So if you own a Panasonic drive and some documentation or error message seems to refer to it as "Matshita", now you know why!
