Hitachi GD-5000 DVD-RAM Region-Free Firmware Hack
There's some reason to believe that some versions of
the Hitachi GD-5000 firmware were RPC-1 (region free).
However, it appears that most of the drives shipped with firmware
that was RPC-2 (region locked).
rpc1.org offers pointers to both
various versions of the firmware,
and Windows and Macintosh utilities for setting the drive
to RPC-1 mode.
As with all such utilities,
USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Remember, a botched firmware update could leave your drive
inoperable.
