Hitachi GD-5000 DVD-ROM/DVD-RAM Drive
Not just a DVD-ROM drive, the Hitachi GD-5000 can also read DVD-RAM discs.
Hitachi announced this IDE/ATAPI drive back in November of 1999.
This drive is a reader, not a burner, and it offers read compatibility with:
- All CD types
- Single and dual layer DVD-ROM and DVD-Video
- DVD-R
- DVD-RAM (both 2.6GB and 4.7GB)
There is no cartridge support, so you must be able to remove the DVD-RAM from its cartridge to
read it with this drive.
Hitachi claimed data transfer rates of
11MB/second for DVD-ROM discs,
6MB/second (40X) for CD-ROM discs,
and about 1.4MB/second for DVD-RAM.

The Hitachi GD5000 DVD-ROM was popular enough to apparently be sold by Dell at
one point.
Likewise, Compaq appears to have used it in some of their systems.
