Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PageThe HP740i/HP740e Dual-Layer DVD BurnerHewlett-Packard announced the DVD740 line of optical drives on October 4, 2005. The drive comes in both "internal" and "external" forms. The DVD740i is the internal form of the drive. It's an IDE interface, suitable for putting into any standard 5.25 inch, half-height bay in a desktop PC. This drive is also seems to get listed as a "DVD740vi" and as a "DVD740ri"; as far as I can tell, these are essentially the same drive as the DVD740i. The DVD740e is the external form of the drive. It comes with a power supply, and uses a USB 2.0 interface to connect to your desktop or laptop PC. The DVD740 line is new enough that it supports HP's LightScribe labelling technology, which lets you burn grayscale images with the drives own laser instead to create custom labels, instead of having to stick on paper labels or use a pen.
