Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PageColor LightScribeThe LightScribe burning process produces images that are often called "silkscreen quality". But however good the quality, the fact remains that it is monochrome -- LightScribe technology does not support color! This is a drawback that jumps out at nearly every reviewer of LightScribe technology. In his Wall Street Journal review of LightScribe, Walt Mossberg listed the lack of color among the downsides that "show the new technology needs work". Of course, HP is aware that color is something people would like, so that doesn't mean there won't be a color LightScribe process in the future, especially if the existing LightScribe becomes popular among consumers. In fact, Brian Livingston reports that a little bird told him that color LightScribe would be out in 6 months. Of course, he also heard directly from HP that color LightScribe is not impossible, but also not very easy. I suspect the latter assessment is more realistic. Given the multiple delays in getting the first version of LightScribe to retail shelves, I would be quite surprised to see color LightScribe ship any time in 2005. See Also
