The Lite-On DVDRW SHM-165H6S Dual-Layer DVD Burner

Announced in January, 2006, Lite-On calls this DVD writer a "Super AllWrite" drive. That basically means you get the ability to read and write DVD-RAM discs on top of all the other usual suspects (recordable CD, recordable DVD, dual-layer DVD). The SHM-165H6S also supports LightScribe, Hewlett-Packards's technology that lets you burn graphical labels on the flip side of your discs (if you buy special LightScribe recordable media). Until the new DVD standard wars (Blu-Ray versus HD) shake out (which could take quite a while), this drive offers pretty much every feature most users could want from a DVD burner.

The basic parameters of this drive are: 16x DVD reading speed, and write speeds of 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 8x DVD+R DL, 4x DVD-R DL, 5x DVD-RAM writing speeds (assuming appropriate media, of course). Although not the fastest in all categories, these are all respectable times, and with early street prices of around $50, it's no surprise the SHM-165H6S generally gets favorable reviews.
