NEC Optical DrivesNEC has been the source of some of the most popular optical drives
for PCs.
Their importance in the ongoing standards war can be seen
in their proposal (jointly with Toshiba)
for the blue-laser DVD format.
In late 2005, NEC announced that it would merge its optical drive business with
that of Sony to form Sony NEC Optiarc.
It appears that Lite-On will do the actual optical drive manufacturing for this
new joint venture, which could poise Lite-On to become the biggest
maker of optical drives in the world.
