Sony Optical DrivesSony is no Johnny-come-lately to the optical drive business.
They were a primary partner with Philips in inventing the original
CD-ROM, starting all the way back in 1979.
They have also been active in the seemingly neverending format wars
for recordable optical discs.
The arc of Sony's optical disk drive business hit an inflection
point more recently.
Sony and NEC essentially joined their optical disk drive operations
to form a new entity: Sony NEC Optiarc, Inc.
