Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PageNew Hitachi GD-5000 DVD-ROM Drive Can Read DVD-RAMHitachi has announced a new DVD drive: the Hitachi GD-5000. The GD-5000 features the ability to read DVD-RAM discs in addition to the usual array of standards for CD and DVD optical disc. DVD-RAM offers higher reliability and cross-machine compatibility than the more common recordable DVD formats, making it an attractive choice when you want to use backup software to backup to optical discs. This drive, unfortunately, cannot burn DVD-RAM, but it can at least read DVD-RAM discs created elsewhere. The drive offers 11MB/s transfer rates for DVD-ROM and 6MB/s transfer rates for CD-ROM. The GD-5000 can read both DVD-RAM and DVD-R single-sided discs; this is not a cartridge drive, so you have to take the disc out of the cartridge (e.g., DVD-RAM cartridge) if it came with one. The entire list of supported media for reading includes: DVD-RAM, DVD-ROM, DVD-Video, CD-ROM, CD-R/RW, PhotoCD, Audio CD, and Video CD. See Also
