Case Study in Disaster Recovery

CIO Government published an article on an Australian government agency that incurred severe fire and managed to quickly get information services up and running again. Interesting points include the fact that Y2K efforts got the necessary attention focused on the problems of disaster recovery and business continuity, and also the problem of the optimal distance for separating backup facilities.

If you put your backup facility too close, it may fall prey to the same disaster that takes out your main facility. If you put your backup facility too far away, then when disaster strikes you may have trouble shifting personnel over to it because of the travel times.
