Avamar Cuts Backup Bandwidth

Martin J. Garvey writes in Information Week about how a software package called Axion 2.0 is cutting backup and recovery times for business. Customer Qualcomm claims to have cut their backup window down to 15 minutes, from 2 hours.

If you read the Avamar website, you'll see that they are also interested in reducing storage requirements, not just backup/restore times. Their "commonality factoring" appears aimed at reducing the amount of redundant storage of data in backups. That's the sort of thing that will continue to make disk-to-disk backups more affordable.
