CLiP6 to Support UDF 2.0 and 2.01

BHA is planning to release CLiP6 on September 21, 2004. This new version of their packet-writing software will support UDF 2.0 and 2.01, the filesystem standards for optical media. Support for DVD+RW Quick Start and "Mount Ranier" (CD-MRW) is also included.

The various UDF specifications (and vendors attempts to implement them correctly) contribute to the dreaded unreadable optical disc problem that Windows suffers from. That's when you create an optical disk (CD or DVD) on one machine, but find you can't read it later. Sometimes, the problem is simply that you need a UDF 2.0 reader or a UDF 2.01 reader.

But sometimes the problem is that different vendors don't quite implement the various UDF specifications identically. That means you might create a UDF 2.0 disc with one machine, and find that you can't read it on another machine because it is using a UDF reader that came from a different vendor. Hopefully, Longhorn will ship with full support for all modern optical disc filesystems built in, and reduce the great optical disk incompatibility mess.
