Press Releases Botch Verbatim LightScribe Announcement

Verbatim has announced that it will make optical discs that support HP's new LightScribe labelling technology. LightScribe requires both special media and special optical drives, so signing up a major media manufacturer is good news for the still-not-shipping technology.

Unfortunately, many of the press releases published on the web seem to have gotten the facts not quite right. They explicitly refer to "LightScribe ink", but LightScribe is an inkless solution -- it works by using the optical drive's laser to change the color of special ink that resides on the label side of the special LightScribe media. I eventually made a web page to try to dispel some of the LightScribe ink confusion generated by this botched press effort.

Verbatim is also known as Mitsubishi Kagaku Media, or MKM.
