Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PageAD Backup Restore Faster Than ReplicationActive Directory (AD) is Microsoft's directory service product designed to replace the domain-based system of services rolled out in NT 4. Express Computer has a nice article on AD myths and reality. What caught my eye was the tip that you can now perform the initial replication of Active Directory information by performing a backup (e.g. to DVD), then carrying the media around and doing restores on the other machines in the network. I know, it sounds nuts to think that DVD I/O speeds would beat network transmission for speed and convenience. However, if you're unfortunate enough to be managing Active Directory across a Widw-Area Network (WAN) with slow connecting lines, this actually makes sense.
