Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PageSunGard Spawns Data Recovery CompanyReuters is reporting that SunGard Data Systems will spin off its "data recovery business". Presumably, the resulting increase in SGS stock is due making the transaction profitable for shareholders, rather than a belief that SGS is better off without it. In this case, "data recovery" means what most data professionals would call "disaster recovery" -- making sure companies can quickly get to a separate copy of their data, rather than recovering data off of damaged disks and the like. Of note in the article about the unit itself: 2,000 employees, $1.2 billion in reveue, and $340 million operating income in 2003. The field of partially managing companys' data continues to appear quite profitable. Featured Article: Why undelete utilities may fail just when you need them most! |
