StompSoft Offers Retail Data Recovery

StompSoft has released RecoverLost Data, a Windows utility designed to "search, recover, and undelete lost data." This appears to be a software-based "undelete" type of utility, so it's worth going over what that means.

  • You really want the software installed long before you have an accidental file deletion so that you can run it instantly after an accidental deletion.
  • Most everything you do on your computer after you accidentally delete a file can reduce the odds of being able to successfully "undelete" that file. You don't want to install software, log off, use email, browse the web, etc. if you can possibly avoid it.
  • The software probably can't help you if the file was lost because of problems with the media (e.g., scratched optical disc, crashed hard drive, etc.).
  • If you're desperately downloading this software because you just deleted a directory full of stuff, try to download it via a separate machine. Sadly, you still have to install it to use it, and that process could end up overwriting the parts of the disk containing the files you're hoping to "undelete".

RecoverLost Data costs $39.99 for a downloadable copy. The package runs on Windows 98SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000 Pro, and Windows XP. The product home page is at: www.stompsoft.com/recoverlostdata.html
