Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PagePC World Reports on LightScribe DelayIn a small article at pcworld.com, Melissa Perenson reports that HP's new LightScribe technology for labelling optical discs is still missing in action. She quotes an HP representative who repeates the new promised ship date of January 2005. However, for once, a reporter actually pressed HP to reveal what's up with that missed-by-a-mile ship date. The reply was to the effect that all the pieces (drive, media, software) have been working, but not "working together". Who knows what that really means, but it sure sounds like the traditional optical disc swamp of trying to get multiple manufacturers to conform to a specification closely enough to avoid compatibility nightmares. If true, than better the technology is delayed until they get it absolutely right. A consumer buying LightScribe discs that burn correctly in some LightScribe drives but not others would guarantee that this new technology would be still-born. See Also
