Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PageLite-On and BenQ to Produce LightScribe DVD BurnersDigiTimes reports that Lite-On and BenQ will OEM 16x DVD burners that are LightScribe-compatible. LightScribe is Hewlett-Packard's technology for burning monochrome labels onto the non-data side of optical media. The really interesting part of the article is the indication that HP will not allow OEMs to sell LightScribe drives until the second quarter of 2005. Since HP still (as of late January, 2005) has not managed get its own LightScribe burners into retail stores (or LightScribe media, for that matter!), this seems like an entirely unnecessary restriction. Another interesting note in the article is the comment that the per-drive royalty to HP "may be" $2 or $3. That presumably is on top of a still unknown per-drive cost just to implement the technology, since LightScribe requires drives to spin with more precision at lower speeds than usual. See Also
