Backup Critic Storage/Media Deals PageNetBackup 6.0 Media Blitz ArrivesNetBackup is the VERITAS (yup, they're an UPPERCASE company) solution for company-wide backups across the network. As you can read in the NetBackup 6.0 press release, the new version features: centralized management of backups (even those from some non-VERITAS backup products), bare metal recover across multiple operating systems (even to non-identical hardware), and integration with NetApp. The press release fails to mention one attractive feature of the new version: it promises to fix a bug that gives attackers root authority. Most media coverage of the new product (so new, it hasn't shipped yet!) merely rehashes (or reprints) the press release, so I immediately thought "How can I be even lazier than that?" The answer immediately came to me: by just rehashing the rehashed coverage. Let's get to it! The Register manages to spice things up a bit by mentioning the EMC rivalry with VERITAS. Both the comparison of EMC to a cornered animal and the VERITAS attempt to only be compared to their bigger rival (IBM) are appreciated. I got excited by the coverage over at eChannelLine Daily News when I saw that a mention of some "party tools", but that turned out to just be a case of a bad line break -- they were actually talking about "third-party tools". Over at SearchStorage.com, Kevin Komeiga insists on making us lazy editors look bad by publishing some actual useful information: tips on negotiating a better price for NetBackup. Clearly, he has not learned that, on the web, the goal is to spend as little time as possible generating some keyword-laden crud that you can wrap your AdSense ads around. In fact, one site (which I will mercifully not link to here) contained a single paragraph regurgitated from the press release, wrapped with no fewer than three AdSense ad groups. There were actually more ads than text! Featured Article: Why undelete utilities may fail just when you need them most! |
