Floppies No Good for Eclipses, Either

Today's solar eclipse adds to the long list of things that floppies are no longer good for: solar eclipse filters. This comes from Zaman Online, over Turkey (I think!), where it is opined: "Watching the eclipse with sun glasses, shaded glasses, floppy disks, colored negatives or x-ray films will not prevent eye damage." So, if you were saving that last box of floppies to pass out at your next totality party, this is pretty bad news. And showing everybody how to break open the disk to get at the disc inside would have been such a good ice breaker!

On the other hand, NASA doesn't really claim you'll injure your eyes by looking at the sun through that dark brown disc, only that "the optical quality of the solar image formed by a floppy disk or CD is relatively poor ". Still, given how fast my eyesight is fading with age, I'm afraid I'm going to have to with the Turks on this one. No floppy-colored sunglasses for me.
