Iomega Announces Inexplicably Overpriced Hardware

Designtechnica is reporting on Iomega's new "REV Loader 280", a USB appliance that lets you plug in up to eight of Iomega's 35GB removable REV disks. Comes bundled with a BrightStor license, which ain't cheap in itself. The whole package is supposed to retail for "around $1,000".

OK, I know this could make sense if you've already invested in the Iomega REV removable drive technology, but I can't help struggling with the math. $1,000 gets you more or less a fancy-pants enclosure -- that price doesn't include any of the removable disks you put in the thing. So, that $1,000 enclosure ends up holding up to 280GB (8*35).

Meanwhile, you can easily get a 500GB SATA/II drive for $250, and a decent USB enclosure to put it in for another $50. Iomega hardware is cool and all, but I just can't pony up the the price they ask. It kinda reminds me of those mix and match toys for kids. You buy one toy you want, then Iomega makes their money by selling you all kinds of accessories and add-ons.
